Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and his wife Susan invited 900 guests to an indoor Superspreader Christmas party this week, but fewer than 70 people actually showed up. That included Pompeo himself who was mysteriously AWOL for the event. But then we learned why yesterday, when it was revealed Pompeo had been exposed to Covid.

The State Department was elusive about where and how Pompeo became exposed, saying only that he had tested negative and was quarantining. But the exposure could have come from any of the recent superspreader events Pompeo either hosted or attended in the last two weeks. Pompeo has been meeting with scores of dignitaries and diplomats for indoor holiday gatherings, where masks were removed for eating, drinking and picture-posing, and social distancing was not closely monitored or adhered to.

The Tuesday party where fewer than 70 of 900 guests showed and Pompeo was a no-show, was dedicated to the family members of diplomats serving in dangerous postings overseas. The party was held despite Pompeo’s own State Department recommendation that employees hold virtual events and not in-person parties, and in defiance of CDC guidelines and health regulations in Washington D.C.

When the party was announced last month Pompeo faced immediate backlash by lawmakers who said it had all the hallmarks of another White House Superspreader event. Despite this Pompeo persisted with party plans, and did not cancel it even after he had to quarantine and the RSVPs showed an embarrassingly small fraction of invitees would attend.

Who could have foreseen in this pandemic of historic proportions that people who don’t wear f*cking masks and choose to share air with people they don’t live with can come down with Covid-19?

The State Department was supposed to hold another follow-up Superspreader party last night to honor 180 foreign ambassadors and support staff. But in a rare about-face the party was cancelled. However, the Washington Post reported that foreign embassies had been told the party was merely postponed “due to unforeseen circumstances.”

Unforeseen circumstances. Riiiiight. Who could have foreseen in this horrific pandemic that people who don’t wear f*cking masks and choose to share air with people they don’t live with can come down with Covid?

Really, who knew?
