Let me answer that — most definitely.
And by Dick, I’m referring to Wall Street Journal editorial writer Joseph Epstein, whose op-ed piece from yesterday disparaged soon-to-be First Lady Dr. Jill Biden for using the title “Dr.” even though she doesn’t deliver babies. (She has a Doctorate in Education.)
The piece, titled “Is There a Doctor in the White House? Not if You Need an M.D.,” which first appeared online Friday night, has not gone over well. In fact the internet is having none of it. Both Epstein and the WSJ editorial board have been getting shitcanned from every angle.
Epstein’s piece begins like this:
“Madame First Lady—Mrs. Biden—Jill—kiddo: a bit of advice on what may seem like a small but I think is a not unimportant matter. Any chance you might drop the “Dr.” before your name? “Dr. Jill Biden” sounds and feels fraudulent, not to say a touch comic.”
Epstein cites an unnamed “wise man” who supposedly said “no one should call himself Dr. unless he has delivered a child” and then asked Dr. Biden to “think about it.”
MSNBC and Morning Joe co-host Joe Scarborough said this morning he couldn’t even get past the first paragraph because “I thought it was a joke.” Then Scarborough’s wife and co-host Mika Brzezinski embarked on an epic takedown of Epstein in true Mika fashion.
“The staggeringly sexist argument to a highly accomplished 69-year-old woman was to tell the ‘kiddo’ who received two Master’s as well as a Doctorate that she shouldn’t use the term ‘Doctor,’ unless she delivered a baby,” Brzezinski said.
Brzezinski noted that Dr. Biden had earned her PhD in Education at age 55, and never stopped teaching at a community college while her husband Joe Biden was first Senator and then Vice President. Dr. Biden plans to continue teaching even while serving as First Lady, she added.
Brzezinski summed up the column as “petty, elitist and misogynistic,” adding, “You can imagine he was dead serious when he wrote that … We don’t even have to ask if this would have written by a man.”
One of the strongest rebukes against the 83-year-old Epstein came from Northwestern University, where he worked as a visiting lecturer in the English department from 1974-2002. The university released a statement condemning the opinion piece, saying “Northwestern is firmly committed to equity, diversity and inclusion, and strongly disagrees with Mr. Epstein’s misogynistic views.” Northwestern also removed Epstein from its website.
One of the best quips about Epstein’s lowbrow piece came from Chasten Buttigieg, husband of Democratic presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg, who said Epstein “could’ve used fewer words to just say ‘ya know in my day we didn’t have to respect women.”
So yeah, it’s partially an age-thing. But mostly it’s a dick-thing in every sense of the word.
And by the way, this happened today too — Trump flunked out of the electoral college:
