Welcome to Cartoon State! I’m the founder and editor of this new progressive blog that I started in the wake of the 2020 presidential election. What started as a self-indulgent therapy blog — an exercise to combat my PTSD after four years of Trump — is now a growing platform for political satire and commentary reflective of our tumultuous times.
I’m no stranger to blogs, not even political ones, and my background as a journalist and writer are my street credentials here. Other hats I’ve worn include retail web entrepreneur, stay-at-home mom, suburban housewife, and non-fiction writer on topics of criminal justice and prison reform.
I’m fascinated and alarmed at the rise of Trumpism, and I’m not naive enough to believe the cult will disappear after their leader’s eviction on January 20, 2021. What is to become of us as a democracy? Will there ever be a post-Trump era where the vast majority of Americans return to a belief in science, data, truth and credentialed news sources? Can we possibly heal, or will we stay divided in our carefully curated information bubbles of myopic word-views? These are some of the topics I’d like to explore. Oh, and I adore political cartoons, obviously. (All images used with permission.)
If you don’t care for the tone and tenor of Cartoon State, you would not be alone, considering nearly half the 2020 voters opted for another four years of the Trump Shit Show. In this case I say leave, go somewhere else, this progressive expression of opinion and satire is not for you. It will just make you sad.
And if you wonder why I write under a pseudonym, then you haven’t been paying attention to the real news lately. As Americans our freedom of expression is guaranteed under the Constitution, but there is no guarantee of safety for espousing ideas unpopular with certain segments of society — especially in this climate. So I remain Olive America for now, a humble servant trying to understand politics in the age of Trumpism.
